An exciting, newer venture as the result of a collaboration of two exciting winemaking pioneers: David Croix of Domaine des Croix in Burgundy and Jura-local Damien Courbet (of Domaine Courbet).
Their project centered around Savagnin, an ancient grape cultivated since the Middle Ages and a parent to many of the world’s modern grapes (like Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc). But while a lot of Savagnin in the Jura is made into an oxidative “sous voile” style, Croix et Courbet is ouille or “sans-oxygen”. I'd venture to say the duo takes a Burgundian approach to this variety, allowing for the flavor profile of the grape to shine through. The result: a weighty but gorgeous wine showing a round texture and a brilliant fruity character akin to some of the best Chardonnays I’ve had.
.2019 is the first vintage of Croix et Courbet, and judging by their first release, their star has nowhere to go but up. Phenomenal wine at a great price, an ideal win-win situation.
"The eponymous winemaking duo became friends over two decades ago, and as their winemaking journeys unfolded, they would taste together and muse over mutual interest in creating unique wines, as well as their joint love of the Jura. About a decade or so ago, a seismic shift started to occur as new winemaking families moved in, and traditionalist Jura winemakers moved on, retired or passed. Seizing on the opportunity of great vineyard land, David and Damien began to create these incredible wines by combining their passions."
