CELLAR ACCESS - OCTOBER!!
With summer fully in the rearview mirror, we’ve got another trio of delicious bottles this month that we can’t wait to share with you as we thankfully move into the best season for drinking wine.
This month, we’re featuring Pinot Noir (our favorite grape) in three different ways! First up is a Blanc de Noirs from Taisne Riocour, a relative newcomer to bottling their own Champagne in the Aube department. Next, we have arguably the top wine being made in Irancy from Thierry, Gabin, and Felix Richoux. Up third is a bottle from one of our favorite under-the-radar growers in Burgundy, whose wines you should definitely know about.

NV Taisne Riocour, Blanc de Noirs Brut, Champagne
NV Taisne Riocour, Blanc de Noirs Brut, Champagne
100% Pinot Noir from three vineyards: Tronchois, Pragnon and Val-Germain in Les Riceys. The wine is fermented in stainless steel for 10-15 days and aged three years before bottling. 10% of reserve wine is added.
After selling off their production for well over a century, the de Taisne family decided to begin a new chapter, bottling their own wines beginning with the 2014 vintage. Working from their historic vineyards in the Aube department, the five siblings are finally giving their family legacy a chance to speak.
Taisne Riocour
One of our favorite stories in the world of wine is a revelation by hardworking families that perhaps selling off their annual production to giant houses isn’t the best. The de Taisne family have been growing grapes in the Aube department since 1837 but until 2014, the grapes were always sold off to big houses.
The de Taisnes own 21 hectares of vines spread across the commune of Les Riceys, which has perhaps more in common with the neighboring Cote d’Or than their neighbors in the north. Pierre and Charles de Taisne are the family members in charge with assistance from Enologists Jean-Philippe Trumet and Laurent Max.
Fermentation and aging occurs in stainless steel for ten to fifteen days except for a single percent of their Grand Reserve cuvee, which is aged in barrels. Everything at the domaine is aged in bottle for three years before release. The Tronchois vineyard is one of the family’s crown jewels with a history as a quality vineyard site dating back to the 11th century.

2021 Thierry Richoux, Irancy, Veaupessiot
2021 Thierry Richoux, Irancy, Veaupessiot
A clay-rich, old-vine parcel overlooking the Yonne river. 100% destemmed and aged for three years before release. The most memorable wine from the domaine produced in only the best years.
Thierry Richoux, now accompanied by his sons Gabin and Felix, is perhaps the finest producer working in Irancy today. The wines are both delightful to drink young and cellar magnificently, and despite an exploding Burgundy market, the Richoux wines remain an incredible value. In quality vintages, the Richoux family releases two single-vineyard bottlings, Veaupessiot and Les Cailles, that exceed the appellation.
Thierry Richoux
The Richoux family has been cultivating vines in the village of Irancy since the 17th century. Thierry is an iconic figure in the area who has been a major force for improving the reputation of the red wines from Irancy. During his tenure, he oversaw the organic conversion of their 18 hectares in Irancy, which was certified in 2013.
The Richoux family is meticulous about sorting, employing multiple tables to ensure only the best grapes make their way into the winery. The reds are 100% destemmed, and elevage at Domaine Richoux ranges from 24 to 36 months, with a full year in stainless steel and a full year in large foudres. Despite their proximity to Chablis and a very similar geological soil composition, the focus at the domaine is red wine production, supplemented by some Cremant de Bourgogne and Rose.
Thierry's two sons, Gabin and Felix, have recently assumed the reins of the domaine and are the 11th generation making wine in the appellation.Their organic and biodynamically farmed vineyards on a variety of aspects on mostly steep slopes are composed of limestone marl and clay.

2023 Rodolphe Demougeot, Bourgogne, Terroir Valotte Pinot Noir Vieilles Vignes
2023 Rodolphe Demougeot, Bourgogne, Terroir Valotte Pinot Noir Vieilles Vignes
Sourced from an old-vine parcel in the cote Chalonnaise. Destemmed and fermented for 12-14 days in vat. Aging is done in 10% new barrels with bottling done according to the lunar calendar.
Despite diligently learning the chemical techniques of the day, Rodolphe Demougeot has since spent the past 30 years working on a careful and systematic unlearning in his family's eight hectares spread throughout the Cote de Beaune. With holdings primarily in Meursault and Pommard, Rodolphe is one of the rare talents in Burgundy whose reds and whites are equally as compelling.
Rodolphe Demougeot
Rodolphe inherited his family domaine in 1992 with eight hectares spread around Meursault and Pommard. Throughout the first decades of his tenure, Rodolphe carefully removed all chemical and synthetic treatments in the vineyard and now works all his vineyards organically. The winery is based in Meursault, but the domaine produces bottlings from Pommard, Savigny-les-Beaune, and Beaune, along with a swath of delicious regional wines that shouldn't be overlooked.
Rodolphe prefers light extraction for the reds, and fermentations occur in stainless steel and cement before being aged in predominantly used barrels. For both reds and whites, new oak is used judiciously (a maximum of 10% for the whites and a maximum of 30% for the reds), and Rodolphe's style manages to balance new and old-school sensibilities. Bottling is done by gravity and according to the lunar calendar, which has been the next step in the domaine's evolution.
The village-level bottlings overdeliver, and the regional wines are some of the best we've tasted. Rodolphe is a rising star in the region whose farming and winemaking is well respected even among his very famous peers.
