After spending five years working side by side with Jean Foillard, Anthony Thevenet seems poised to join the next generation of legendary winemakers working in the cru of Morgon. After inheriting a few hectares from his grandfather in the early 2010s, Anthony (joined by his father, who retired from a career as a mechanic at Mercedes to help in the vines) has built a name for his wines and has slowly acquired a stable of vineyards spread across the region.

Anthony Thevenet spent seven years working between the legendary Beaujolais figures Georges Descombes and Jean Foillard before setting off to work a few inherited parcels in Morgon. His grandparents are retired winemakers who converted nine hectares of forest area to vineyards of Gamay during their lifetime. In 2013, he took the reins of the domaine and has been in the process of totally converting the family production to organics.

Heavily influenced by his apprenticeships with Descombes and Foillard, Anthony prefers to work with whole clusters and ferment semi-carbonically, seeking delicate extraction that leads to wines that are both lifted and complex. Aging at the winery occurs in a mixture of concrete tanks and used barrels. In addition to a stable of reds made from terroirs across Beaujolais, Anthony produces a Beaujolais Blanc and a few wines from extremely old-vine parcels in Morgon.

The size of his production has slowly increased, as Anthony has been able to acquire plots in different areas of the region, including vines on the famed Cote de Py. Most recently, he has been able to acquire vineyards in the cru of Chenas and land in the Beaujolais-Villages AOP that help round out his production.

Retasting the 2023 Beaujolais-Villages, it continues to offer attractive brambly red berry fruit with a touch of undergrowth. The palate is well balanced, the tannins a little softer than a year ago, with a pleasant piquancy on the finish.
