Old-vine, chalky Chardonnay plot, with plantings from 1961. Adrien's early small-plot tests proved this plot to be the very best Chardonnay of the family, even though 70% of the vineyard is dedicated to Pinot Noir.

To those once immersed in Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia, Verzy was a long-forgotten Grand Cru of Champagne; with Adrien Renoir? For Daniel, it's a daily craving, and one thing he carries home more often than not. Fully barrel-fermented, Adrien's wines are sizzling with both depth and energy, given the deep chalk soils under the Pinot & Chard vines.

Adrien Renoir

Kin of a winemaking family in Verzy, the 30-something Adrien took over fully under his own name in 2019. From the start, Adrien was all about experimentation, small-parcel fermentations - at first by virtue of small amounts of fruit - and has continued this fashion, loving the control and individualization this style allows.

The complexity of Verzy is vast; deep chalk soils line the bedrock, but in parts - such as where most of Adrien's Pinot vines lie - there is a dark, black clay above that chalk. Fully organic as of 2017, the vines have responded well, as they saw few chemicals over their 75+ years of life.

Our favorite kind of winemaker, Adrien is incredibly driven and willing to experiment if there's a chance his processes raise the quality of his wines without chemicals. Each singular wine brings a new prism through which to see Adrien's classy take on a sleeping giant.

Disgorged in June 2024 with a dosage of one gram per liter, Renoir's 2020 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Les Montants, has turned out beautifully. Renoir recalls this as a particularly dry season, with no rain until August, which led to a loss of approximately 15% of the fruit due to drought. Flamboyant and expressive, it soars from the glass with a bouquet of pear, pastries, peach and dried white flowers. On the palate, it is ample and textural, boasting a more powerful presence than the 2019 rendition. Full-bodied and concentrated, it is enveloping and muscular, with a rich, layered core of fruit and a chalky extract that imparts a sensation of freshness. This rendition is more fruit-forward and charming and will offer a broad enjoyment window.

The 2020 Extra Brut Les Montants Verzy Grand Cru is a pure Chardonnay from vines planted in 1961, picked in the eponymous parcel. A lovely scent of green, juicy melon almost comes with a smooth sheen of waxiness and an overtone of nutty celeriac, making for an unusual but appetizing nose. The palate adds smokiness and amplifies the sense of candlewax, followed by a light, smooth body with gentle but foamy bubbles that lend an air of ease and soothing freshness. Dosage is 1 gram per liter. Disgorged: June 2024.
