To those once immersed in Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia, Verzy was a long-forgotten Grand Cru of Champagne; with Adrien Renoir? For Daniel, it's a daily craving, and one thing he carries home more often than not. Fully barrel-fermented, Adrien's wines are sizzling with both depth and energy, given the deep chalk soils under the Pinot & Chard vines.
Kin of a winemaking family in Verzy, the 30-something Adrien took over fully under his own name in 2019. From the start, Adrien was all about experimentation, small-parcel fermentations - at first by virtue of small amounts of fruit - and has continued this fashion, loving the control and individualization this style allows.
The complexity of Verzy is vast; deep chalk soils line the bedrock, but in parts - such as where most of Adrien's Pinot vines lie - there is a dark, black clay above that chalk. Fully organic as of 2017, the vines have responded well, as they saw few chemicals over their 75+ years of life.
Our favorite kind of winemaker, Adrien is incredibly driven and willing to experiment if there's a chance his processes raise the quality of his wines without chemicals. Each singular wine brings a new prism through which to see Adrien's classy take on a sleeping giant.
