In 2017, after having taken over for his brother at Domaine Marc Colin in 2004, Joseph was able to prize six hectares away from the domaine for his own use, including several of the very top parcels. Defining his own style - apart from the immediately-recognizable juice of big bro - was of paramount importance. Purity, freshness and vibrancy are keys here, an output showcasing his vineyard work, rather than a winemaking imprint (no lees stirring, sulfuring, or tiny barrels). The Colin family now truly has a full array of hues in the palate!

Joseph Colin

When his older brother Pierre-Yves succeeded dad at the Domaine Marc Colin, the fanfare was enough to leave Joseph in the shadows. When the eponymous PYCM label was founded in the 2004 vintage, Joseph quietly took over the family Domaine, and proceeded to produce wines of impeccable quality every vintage. With enough time to step back and assess his own stylistic preferences, it took almost a decade and a half for Joseph to feel ready to section off six hectares of the family's land, creating his own eponymous label that would stand clearly aside from his family's other labels.

Joseph Colin is a label all about freshness, purity and tension. The sorting of the fruit is very intense, as the wine "making" is limited in scope: with larger barrels favored, a lack of sulfuring or lees stirring or any other imprint, the fruit must be perfectly healthy to craft the sorts of wines he favors.

Plots like Saint-Aubin Chateniere (45-plus years) and Chassagne Cailleret (65-plus, with some centenarian vines), the array of vineyard land in Joseph's arsenal is beyond envy-inducing. They also craft some of the finest whites (and the occasional red) from Burgundy, but wines that will ultimately reward the patient. These are not flashy, but above all, incredibly complex and pure.
