From the steep and low-yielding Falkenberg plot, the 2017 Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese #14 (Auction) is open and intense on the finely slatey and honey-sweet nose. Lush and generous but highly refined and elegant on the palate, this is a frisky, perfectly balanced and salty-piquant Spätlese with great finesse and lingering salinity. A fabulous Juffer Sonnenuhr. Tasted in March 2019.

To the muskmelon and Persian melon that dominated in this auction bottling’s “regular” (A.P. #7) counterpart are here added hints of licorice and geranium. The palate impression is lush, glossy and subtly creamy. But one catches enlivening notes of fresh lime and grapefruit, which lend the superbly sustained finish a sorbet-like combination of animation and light tang with soothing creaminess. And here there is also a clarity and suggestion of stony counterpoint that I missed from the A.P. #7.
