A blend today of an audaciously deep history with new investment, the Chateau Haut-Bailly is inside of its sixth century of existence. In the past it was famous for being one of the very first Chateaux to put a single vintage on its bottles, and later the vineyard team created a unique blend of minerals to safeguard their old vines from the phylloxera epidemic. Moving into the new millennium, the purchase of the estate in 1998 brought on immense improvement in the wines, as many have claimed the 2005 and 2009 to be the best two vintages yet to come from the chateau.

Chateau Haut-Bailly

One thing that sets the Chateau apart is that the vineyards, 96 hectares in total, have been completed and held through the existence of Haut-Bailly as one contiguous block - no separate parcels. The vines date up to 120 years of age, which with smart farming can produce phenomenally complex, deep wines.

Located in Pessac-Leognan (formerly known as "Graves"), the wines will never reach prices of Pauillac's most famous chateaux; that's a good thing. With the gravelly (get it?) soils of Pessac, there's great drainage which allows Cabernet Sauvignon to thrive without getting overtly ripe. The wines are always in balance: depth with brightness and lightness as a keen foil.
