100% Merlot that spends 18 months mostly in French oak, with about 5% in amphora. Once a broad-shouldered, opulent wine, the more recent iterations like the 2020 are much more balanced, bright even, and wildly complex.

One of the most important wineries in Tuscany's Bolgheri, Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli created Le Macchiole which became one of the region's very first wineries. At a time when Sangiovese was still king, this was one of the very first to include grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah into their vineyards, providing Bordeaux & Italian lovers alike a new prism through which to see the region and the grapes.

With a total of 86 acres under vine throughout the appellation, the family remains steadfast in their plot-by-plot assessments; each is harvested individually, stringently sorted and vinified separately. The Bolgheri Rosso is the flagship of the estate, utilizing all of the red grapes that made them famous. The individual wines, such as the Paleo - 100% Cabernet Franc - are well worth seeking out!!

Ripe fruit, dark cherry, oak spice and toast converge with balanced intensity to characterize this generous expression from Tuscany. The issue with Merlot, especially in a hot vintage such as this, is ripeness or, specifically, over-ripeness. Messorio navigates a challenging growing season with flying colors.

The 2020 Messorio is fabulous. Once an opulent, full-throttle wine, Messorio has grown into a much more reserved Merlot these days. Tense with tons of energy, the 2020 appears to have a very bright future once it comes together a bit more fully. I very much admire the vibrancy here. The 2020 spent 18 months in 100% French oak, with 5% of the wine aged in amphora.
