When Catherine and Pascal Mazet inherited a few parcels throughout the Montagne de Reims in 1981, their project was small and centered around a focus on healthy viticulture and meticulous elevage. Today, run by brothers Olivier and Batiste, the domaine is still small, and the wines are among the most mineral, precise and exacting that we’ve come across.
With a few vines passed down to Pascal and Catherine across three different villages in the Montagne de Reims, the two began crafting artisanal Champagne together in the early eighties. From the beginning, they created a stalwart reputation for being in their vines constantly and patiently improving the quality of their vineyards and winemaking technique.
In 2018, their son Olivier took full responsibility of the family domaine after his studies at the Ecole Supérieur d’Agriculture in the Loire Valley. His long-term vision is centered around agroforestry and increasing the biodiversity in the family’s vineyards, borrowing from biodynamic philosophy but not blindly subscribing to fit in with the other progressive wineries in Champagne.
The holdings are spread across the Premier Cru communes of Chigny-Les-Roses and Ludes, with some holdings in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay. All the wines are fermented and aged used barrels which are often supplemented with wine from their solera, which has been continuously topped up since their first vintage in 1981. They also prefer extended lees aging with a minimum of 6 years before release.
