After selling off their production for well over a century, the de Taisne family decided to begin a new chapter, bottling their own wines beginning with the 2014 vintage. Working from their historic vineyards in the Aube department, the five siblings are finally giving their family legacy a chance to speak.

Taisne Riocour

One of our favorite stories in the world of wine is a revelation by hardworking families that perhaps selling off their annual production to giant houses isn’t the best. The de Taisne family have been growing grapes in the Aube department since 1837 but until 2014, the grapes were always sold off to big houses.

The de Taisnes own 21 hectares of vines spread across the commune of Les Riceys, which has perhaps more in common with the neighboring Cote d’Or than their neighbors in the north. Pierre and Charles de Taisne are the family members in charge with assistance from Enologists Jean-Philippe Trumet and Laurent Max.

Fermentation and aging occurs in stainless steel for ten to fifteen days except for a single percent of their Grand Reserve cuvee, which is aged in barrels. Everything at the domaine is aged in bottle for three years before release. The Tronchois vineyard is one of the family’s crown jewels with a history as a quality vineyard site dating back to the 11th century.
