CELLAR ACCESS - DECEMBER!!

CELLAR ACCESS - DECEMBER!!

by Peter Njoroge

We’ve made it to December, and we’ve got one more delivery that we’re excited to send your way as we head towards the dawn of 2026. We’re in full winter workshop mode both in LA and NorCal and wanted to thank you for being a part of Cellar Access this year… and also send you a few more bottles to share with friends and family. Cheers to another year in the books!

Starting this month off is a bottle of Champagne from the Tellier brothers in Moussy, who are soon-to-be rising stars in the region. Next, we have a beautiful Burgundy from the personal project of Dominique Lafon, a name who needs no introduction to lovers of fine wine. And the last bottle for this year is a Syrah from Thomas Farge who is simply one of the most talented producers in the Northern Rhone.

2021 Tellier, Les Massales, Champagne

55% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir, and 25% Pinot Meunier from vineyards in Moussy, Pierry, and Chavot-Courcourt planted on chalk and flint-based soils. A powerful and exacting Champagne displaying tons of precision and a quiet intensity.

Tellier

There’s a terroir-oriented revolution going on in Champagne, and Alexandre and Quentin Tellier are poised to be a big part of it. Their family has long owned vines in Champagne, but it wasn’t until 2016 that the two brothers began making wine from a small proportion of family vineyards, producing a diverse range of micro-cuvees right from the start. Their winery is located in the Coteaux Sud d’Epernay in the village of Moussy, located just a few minutes down the road from Chavot-Courcourt.

Their production is split into three main categories: the blended bottlings are labeled as Les Massales; they also produce single-village wines from Cramant and Pierry; and a range of parcellaire bottlings from individual sites.

All of the fermentation and aging takes place in barrels sourced from specific cooler forests in Vosges, Nievre, and Allier that produce fine-grained wood that the Tellier brothers see as an important detail when considering elevage. Dosage is kept to a minimum as a part of their philosophy, keeping their wines pure and terroir-focused. Elevage is long, and the brothers believe strongly in aging the wines on lees for a minimum of 40 months before disgorgement. The plan is to slowly increase production as they’re able to rehabilitate their family’s holdings to fit their high standards.

2023 Dominique Lafon, Bourgogne, Blanc

Sourced from 20 to 50 year old vines located in Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet that is aged for 12 months in neutral oak. An elegant and subtle White Burgundy that balances vibrant acidity with the trademark Lafon density and richness.

Dominique Lafon

Whether it be in Macon or in his home village of Meursault, Dominique Lafon has always had a desire to expand his footprint in Burgundy. Despite the stellar reputation of Domaine des Comtes Lafon as one of the finest in all of France, Dominique set up another project under his own name built of some choice parcels totaling about 4.5 hectares in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Volnay, and Beaune in 2008.

Dominique believes the wines produced under his own name are more tense and mineral, owing to shorter elevage and a bigger focus on vines planted higher up on different hillsides than the family domaine. He sees the label as a place to continue to learn and experiment as a winemaker without having to change the style of Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Dominique and the team tend to the work in the cellar with extreme care and apply the same biodynamic philosophies in the vineyards.

All the wines from the Dominique Lafon label are made in a separate facility where he runs a custom crush facility called Chateau de Bligny-Les-Beaune with a friend. Dominique does most of the work in the cellar himself and sees this addition to his portfolio as a return to his roots as a vigneron.

2020 Thomas Farge, Cote du Pouly, Saint-Joseph

Sourced from the best plot of land owned by the Farge family. 100% Syrah fermented with 50% whole bunches and aged in a mix of new and used barrels for 12 months.

Thomas Farge

The Farge name isn't new to the Northern Rhone; Thomas' family has been making wine in Saint-Joseph for four generations. After returning home in 2018 after spending 10 years in South America, Thomas has started his own venture. Working bio-dynamically and organically by the moon calendar and implementing what he has taken from working with traditionalists and combining it with modern innovation. He was able to source inspiration and experience from working with producers such as Jean-Louis Chave and Stephane Usseglio, and has scooped up some incredible terroir in the Rhone, including the famed Reynard.

VINEYARDS & WINEMAKING

Thomas has a pretty nice lineup of holdings: Saint-Joseph, Cornas Reynard, Saint-Péray, Condrieu, and Colline Rhondaniennes, each with a diversity of types of granite soils and vineyard expositions. In Saint-Joseph, his plot in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols is at the southern portion of the village. The granite here is less degraded with south/southeast facing vines, producing wines with generosity and lush texture.  In his Cornas the plots are granite-laced with gneiss and clay topsoil, great for water retention in warm years and helpful in moderating the acidity in the wines, giving an elegant yet deep example of Cornas tannin .
