In the village of Moussy, Les Freres Tellier are starting to turn heads with their fantastic, albeit limited, production. While vineyards have been in the family since the early 20th century, Alex and Quentin Tellier began vinifying small portions of their family’s plots in 2016. They exclusively use free-run juice for their wine, which is aged in fine-grained barrels sourced from forests in Vosges, Nievre, and Allier. Elevage is long and slow with nothing released before 40 months' aging.
There’s a terroir-oriented revolution going on in Champagne, and Alexandre and Quentin Tellier are poised to be a big part of it. Their family has long owned vines in Champagne, but it wasn’t until 2016 that the two brothers began making wine from a small proportion of family vineyards, producing a diverse range of micro-cuvees right from the start. Their winery is located in the Coteaux Sud d’Epernay in the village of Moussy, located just a few minutes down the road from Chavot-Courcourt.
Their production is split into three main categories: the blended bottlings are labeled as Les Massales; they also produce single-village wines from Cramant and Pierry; and a range of parcellaire bottlings from individual sites.
All of the fermentation and aging takes place in barrels sourced from specific cooler forests in Vosges, Nievre, and Allier that produce fine-grained wood that the Tellier brothers see as an important detail when considering elevage. Dosage is kept to a minimum as a part of their philosophy, keeping their wines pure and terroir-focused. Elevage is long, and the brothers believe strongly in aging the wines on lees for a minimum of 40 months before disgorgement. The plan is to slowly increase production as they’re able to rehabilitate their family’s holdings to fit their high standards.
