2024 Cigliano di Sopra, Chianti Classico
THE VINEYARD Sourced from plots from San Casciano in Val di Pesa: Carnasciali, Bulleri, Valloni, Vignone, Sottobosco, Piano, Bacio, Clos de Madeleine. All sites are 250-280m above sea level
ASSEMBLAGE 100% Sangiovese
VINE AGE Vineyard sites date back to 1967 (Bulleri), with three smaller plots planted in 2016.
SOIL Predominantly sandy with percentages of silt and clay, rich in limestone and characterized by the presence of ancient river pebbles and deposits (river pebble) dating back to approximately 7 million years ago.
FERMENTATION About 30% of the whole clusters were retained for fermentation, performed in a mix of stainless, concrete and open-top wood vats., with twice-daily pump-overs for the early part of the process, with a final punch-down near the end. Maceration extended 15-25 days before pressing, and a small portion of press wine was added to the wines within foudre, tonneaux and barriques.
AGING Aged 14 months within foudre, tonneaux and barriquess, only racked to encourage continued contact with lees. Bottling occurs directly from foudre, and the wines will remain in bottle at the estate for an additional year prior to release.
BOTTLES PRODUCED 10,848 bottles, 200 magnums and 6 double magnums.
WINEMAKER'S VINTAGE NOTES "The 2024 harvest began with budbreak between late March and early April, with seasonal temperatures. Subsequently, spring recorded slightly above-average temperatures and a good amount of rainfall. Flowering began at the end of May and concluded in the second week of June. From July onwards, temperatures gradually increased, leading to a hot and dry summer. Veraison occurred in the first three weeks of August. Starting in September, a period of heavy rains began, slowing the ripening of the grapes and requiring intense bunch selection. The Sangiovese harvest began on September 15th and continued until October 16th. Despite the difficulties faced during the harvest, the quality of the grapes delivered to the winery was exceptionally high."
