What we love best about the Jura remains the same as ever: the individuality all the micro-producers bring to their craft. Geraud & Pauline Fromont of Domaine des Marnes Blanches exemplify this to a T, their wines at once individualistic but exact; they showcase their grape, their vineyard and their vintage. Why so? Well, everything on the small estate is done very thoughtfully, and with great care paid to the vines. Elegance in the wines is almost accidental, but eternally repetitive, a sign of a keen eye and, well, people who actually make wines that they want to drink.

Domaine des Marnes Blanches

After acquiring land in the Southern portion of the Cotes du Jura, Geraud & Pauline Fromont began to adapt what they had learned in growing other crops to their new fields of grape vines. Growing into their domaine together, the duo each participate in every facet of the Domaine's maintenance, the bulk of the work centered around maintaining their vineyards which can approach a century of age.

What tireless work is performed here still yields tiny amounts of bottles, but it is not for lack of trying. What sets this Domaine apart from many of their neighbors and peers is that all parcels are vinified separately, seeking true expression of a single grape, a single vineyard, a single vintage. Marls of white and red make up a large portion of the soils with fossilized seashells interwoven, proviking a vibrant minerality in the wines. Savagnin and Chardonnay dominate the white palate here, but Geraud and Pauline have been encouraged by the early returns of Poulsard and Trousseau, the latter of which they have planted more of in recent years.

The occasional sous voile style is produced, but the topped-up "ouille" styles are much in the favor here, as we find a style that is reminiscent of top Chablis, just in a whole different sphere, with a different soul.
