Perched atop the historic Roche Aux Moines in Savennieres is one of the great addresses for cerebral Chenin Blanc in today’s Loire. Following in the footsteps of her mother Monique, Tessa Laroche is making gastronomic wines that highlight one of the Loire’s most unique and historic appellations.

Domaine Aux Moines

In 1981, the Laroche family acquired Domaine Aux Moines – originally occupied by monks from the Abbey Saint-Nicolas in Angers – and have situated the winery as one of the key players in this tiny but mighty portion of the Anjou-Saumur region. With a unique history dating back to the 12th century, dry Chenin from the commune of Savennieres is one of the Loire Valley’s crown jewels.

Domaine Aux Moines owns 12 of the 22 hectares that make up the Roche Aux Moines appellation and the vines surround their magnificent property overlooking the Loire. For context, the infamous biodynamic philosopher and winemaker Nicholas Joly and his Coulee de Serrant are right next door.

The domaine releases just two wines made exclusively from Chenin Blanc: the estate bottling, on which you’ll find the beautiful estate property and a cuvee of young vines released under the name Le Berceau des Fees. Harvest occurs over 5 or 6 passes and the estate wine is aged for 18 months before being bottled. Keep an eye out for library releases to see Savennieres at its peak.
