The 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc (Domaine) wafts from the glass with aromas of honeyed pears, freshly baked bread, buttery pastry, Meyer lemon and baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and enveloping, its textural attack segues into a fleshy but vibrant core of fruit and a long, saline finish.

The 2020 Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc 1er Cru has a more low-key bouquet than Domaine du Pavillon's Clos des Mouches, which demands more coaxing from the glass. It unfolds with light peach skin and slightly oily aromas. The palate is well-balanced with a ripe, "sunny" entry, almost viscous in texture that shaves its tension away. There is something almost Alsace Vendange Tardive-like on the finish, which is not meant to be a negative comparison. This is a perplexing showing after a fabulous example tasted a couple of years ago, but it may well be entering a dumb phase and coming out the other side. Drink sooner rather than later. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
