Vinous

Vinous

Pungently penetrating, the nose evokes struck flint, crushed stone and smokehouse aromas, along with site-typical, zesty orange and lemon. These are joined by brightly juicy grapefruit and luscious white fruit on a palate striking for its combination of silken and creamy textural richness with feather-like levity and lacy delicacy. A soothing, cooling hint of mint and an inner-mouth elder flower note fleetingly conjure up Sauvignon or Scheurebe. The evocations of stone, smoke and salt in this wine’s amazingly vibrant and persistent finish are more intense and vivid than any I can recall in nearly forty years of tasting Rieslings from Nierstein’s renowned Roter Hang (Red slope). Nor can I recall a more ideal exemplification of residually sweet Riesling Kabinett’s virtues: buoyancy, clarity, animation and next-sip compulsion. And to think that this is from a vintage in which many growers with outstanding Kabinett track records felt compelled to pass on offering wines of that Prädikat! Even leaving aside issues of heat, “it’s just been too dry in the top Nierstein sites in recent years, and that makes a wine like this a challenge,” Keller shares. He’s certainly risen to it.
