"Benoit Dehu's name only rose to some prominence within the last five years, the Dehu family’s Champagne house was founded in 1787, making Benoit the eighth generation grower of this tiny house in the Vallée de la Marne."

Benoit Dehu

Benoit cut his teeth at Bollinger, and was inspired to pursue biodynamics in a small plot of his family’s domaine upon returning, creating his eponymous Champagne label, dedicated almost entirely to the Pinot Meunier grape. From this 1.70 hectare plot, Benoit crafts two sparkling wines and two still wines, all of which are vinified in oak, and are bottled without any further interference of fining or filtering, and zero dosage after disgorgement. Heavy limestone soils provide incredible lift to the Meunier grape, emphasizing its floral, zesty tones. La Rue des Noyers Blanc is entirely Meunier, showing off ripe red fruits and the classic Meunier salty-smoky quality. The Rosé version of the wine is allowed to macerate for 42 hours, creating a gorgeous hue in the glass and even more beautiful depth on the palate. Creamy ripe and tart red fruits, dried flowers are finished off with a brilliant mineral strike that elevates the aromatics. His Coteaux Champenois Rouge shows Benoit's ability to show the absolute depth of Meunier's beauty, where the perfect ruby color in the glass gives you a hint of what you're about to experience: wild red and dark fruits with delicate spice and flinty mineral hints, a wild wine and one of the best Coteaux around!

The NV (2017) Initiation is a beautiful, exotic wine. Apricot, orange confit, hazelnut, spice and chamomile give the 2017 a decidedly exotic feel. My impression is that the 2017 will offer its best drinking sooner rather than later, as it is a bit forward, with slightly honeyed notes that start to appear over time. Initiation is a blend of 78% Pinot Noir and 22% Meunier, vinified in oak and bottled with no dosage. Disgorged: July 27, 2019.
