The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées unfurls in the glass with notes of freshly baked bread, crisp green orchard fruit, white flowers and pastry cream. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and open-knit, with a tender, charming profile and a vibrant finish. This hails from the steepest sloping site in Colin's domaine.

The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet Chaumées Clos St-Abdon 1er Cru shows a bit of SO2 on the nose and feels rather muddled at first. Then it gains delineation after 10 minutes, cohering nicely with touches of grilled walnut and hazelnut. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, and quite saline toward a finish of admirable length. A wine that I initially thought was below par ends up one of the finest. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.
