The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru displays aromas of plums, dark chocolate, caramelized orange, spices, grilled game burg and French roast, framed by a lavish application of new wood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and satiny, with a textural attack, a fine-boned but open-knit core and a long, nicely focused finish. It seemed ready for bottling and will be a precocious rendition of the Liger-Belair Echézeaux.

The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru feels a little flat on the nose of simple red fruit, showing a touch of soy and just a hint of VA, perhaps, yet it improves with aeration and manifests much more complexity and personality. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe red fruit, and slightly animally and feral toward the finish, but in a strangely attractive way. This improves in the glass, gaining elegance, and there is real intensity on the finish. An Echézeaux you will remember. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.
