Since 2015, Jasmin has bottled a barrel selection named Olea. The 2016 Cote Rotie Olea received an extra ten months of élevage and includes a higher proportion of new oak than the main bottling. Scents of pain grillé accent cassis and blueberry fruit in this full-bodied, velvety-textured wine. I'm guessing it will thrill some tasters and turn off many traditionalists. For me, the quality is marginally higher, but preference comes down largely to style. Especially given the likely price differential, I'm a fan of the La Giroflarie.

Limpid ruby-red. Highly perfumed, mineral-accented cherry and raspberry scents are complicated by suggestions of exotic spices, candied violet and licorice. Supple and broad in the mouth, offering vibrant red and blue fruit, spicecake, violet pastille and salty olive flavors that become sweeter as the wine opens up. The floral note carries emphatically through the strikingly long finish, which shows outstanding clarity and supple, slow-building tannins.
