Sourced contemporaneously with and from the same stony sector of Abtserde as the corresponding “regular” Auslese, and with the same concern for berry diversity (explicated in my review of that wine), but from an older parcel, this reflects its sizable share of healthy but desiccated berries in an eye-watering 12.8 grams of acidity. “For me, nowadays, ‘gold capsule Auslese’ no longer means more botrytis or a much higher must weight,” explained Keller. “It means Auslese from the best part of a vineyard or its oldest vines.” A penetrating nose featuring lemon and lime zests, white raisin and mirabelle distillate ushers in a palate presence of palpable density and cheek-tugging intensity. This is less buoyant or texturally alluring than the corresponding “regular” Auslese, but delivers implacable grip, mouthwatering salinity, and mouth-shaking vivacity. Give it time.
