Possessing some of the best value in the wine world, Produttori's full range of Barbarescos are known to be routinely outstanding, and never fall short of the hope for each bottle. Even the basic bottling takes juice from the very top crus in the region, all of which in their singular form stand out regularly from their most expensive neighbors.

Produttori del Barbaresco

An estate borne of struggle, the Produttori del Barbaresco is one of the world's greatest co-operatives, in terms of recognition and quality. Though the names of their famous vineyards that stamp the single-vineyard bottlings are known to well-heeled collectors, a majority of those famous vineyards are in fact owned by the 60-some-odd members of the Produttori. In years in which the fruit of one of the top crus is less than entirely perfect, it is de-classified into the flagship "Barbaresco" cuvee; otherwise, we may see up to nine different "Crus" on the famed labels.

Still today, the same traditional methods are employed in the cellars, with a submerged cap over the 18-21 day fermentations, and up to the Riserva-mandated three years in traditional botti. There's no glitz, no glam, and as most things do, we've come back around to enjoying the most traditional and true side of Nebbiolo, which is perhaps best exemplified in the Produttori's wines.

A dark, brooding wine, the 2013 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano comes across as quite virile today, with huge tannins and equally imposing dark fruit. Smoke, leather, licorice and game add to an impression of raw, almost unrestrained, power. There is not a whole lot of finesse here at least not now. The Montestefano is a wine painted in broad brush strokes that emphasize power over elegance. Then again, that is Montestefano. Readers should be in no rush to open the 2013.
