Situated in the lieu-dit parcel of Puligny, Les Enseigneres is located just 5 meters below the prestigious Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet grand cru. The oldest vines were planted in 1930, and the soil composition comprises clay and limestone. The winemaking approach is traditional, involving time spent on the lees and aging in barrels for 15-22 months. Full of tropical fruits with a zippy acidity, this wine is sure to delight the senses.

The 2013 Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignieres felt just a little reduced on the nose when I tasted it at the domaine, although it opens nicely with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with precise acidity. It feels like a harmonious and a "laid back" Puligny-Montrachet with crisp lime and Granny Smith apples furnishing the finish. There is nothing gung-ho about this Puligny – more a wine content in its own skin.

My second bottle of 2013 Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères in 12 months confirms the quality of this wine. There is that signature trait of white chocolate on the nose, flanked by aromas of white flowers and maybe heightened marine-like notes less noticeable on the previous bottle. The palate is imbued with exquisite balance, more saline then I recall and suggesting an element of botrytised fruit that contrasts with what feels like a malic/steely finish. So much energy here - a complex and thoroughly engaging wine from Jean-François. Tasted at Le Bristor de l'Hôtel in Beaune.
