The moniker "PYCM" intimates quality to any well-heeled collector, an immediate feel of comfort in knowing what lies beneath those off-white wax capsules. Colin-Morey has made a name for himself and his wines that few have successfully done without sacrificing quality, which he has not.

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey

From his cellars in Chassagne-Montrachet, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey oversees an enviable palate of different vineyards from seemingly every white wine climat in Burgundy. Along with his inheritance of fine vineyards from his father Marc Colin, for whose domaine Pierre-Yves was winemaker from 1994-2005, Colin has expanded his range with purchases and leases in some of the best plots from Chassagne, Puligny, Meursault, Saint-Aubin and beyond. His small-parcel bottlings from Grand Crus and lesser-known lieu dits are all possessing his winemaking signature of native yeasts and in-barrel fermentations, allowing for similar elegance in each bottling.

The attention is great in the vineyard, where whether the vineyard is owned or leased, the farming is similarly fastidious, opting to harvest at perfect ripeness across all parcels. Grapes are pressed at slightly higher pressure than is common, allowing the natural phenolics to provide texture and add even more aging potential. Wines are fermented in 350L barrels and do not undergo any lees stirring, fining or filtering before bottling.

Weightless and pure, the 2010 Chevalier-Montrachet is utterly impeccable. Layers of sublime, ethereal, perfumed fruit appear to literally float from the glass as this feminine, gracious Burgundy seduces the heart, intellect and palate all at once. Subtle saline notes add freshness on the finish. The 2010 is polished and superbly refined from the very first taste. It is another breathtaking wine. Anticipated maturity: 2014+. Pierre-Yves Colin and Caroline Morey follow their stunning 2009s with an equally compelling set of 2010s. The 2010s have deep site-specific signatures, rich fruit and plenty of acidity. Fans of this small, but increasingly high profile address will want to flock to these wines. Pierre Yves Colin started picking on September 22. Yields were down just 5-10%, which is pretty remarkable considering the vintage. It was a difficult vintage in the cellar, as malos were late and slow. When I visited last June, virtually all of the wines were still finishing their malos. With the exception of the St. Aubins, the 2010s spent about 18 months in barrel. The St. Aubins were bottled in November 2011. All of the other 2010s were bottled in April 2012. The 2011s, which I tasted from barrel, are very promising, so there is a lot to look forward to.

Bright pale yellow. Ineffable, high-pitched aromas of citrus peel, lavender and minerals. The brilliantly penetrating palate combines an utterly silky texture with extraordinary clarity and energy. The wine's stony, citrussy verve is extraordinary, but this great Chevalier-Montrachet will need extended aging to reveal its many facets. The great rising finish shows sexy toast and hazelnut notes along with pure stony, floral terroir.
