Starting out and a gorgeous 2010 that’s comprised of 50% Carignan, 30% Grenache and 20% Cinsault, Barral’s 2010 Faugeres spent upwards of two years in a combination of concrete tank and stainless steel. Big and beefy with ample dark fruit, plum extract, iron, mineral and damp herbs, this beauty flows onto the palate with full-bodied richness, notable freshness and solid underlying structure that finally emerges on the finish. While it has the fruit and texture to drink nicely now, it will evolve for 10-15 years or more. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to meet with winemaker Didier Barral during my travels through the region, but I was able to taste through a few of his 2010s back in Colorado. Count me a fan of this estate. I love the richness, as well as a certain wildness that these wine provide, and they never seem heavy, rustic or cumbersome. In addition, I’ve had his releases back to 2001 and they age beautifully. He’s easily one of the top producers in Faugeres and don’t miss an opportunity to try his wines.
