To call Arnaud Ente a small-production winery would be doing the word 'small' a disservice. Arnaud Ente makes a minuscule amount of wine, making no mistake to only select the very finest fruit from naturally low-yielding, old vines in the Cote de Beaune. As such, each wine he creates, from the Bourgogne-level to his finest crus are treated the very same, resulting in every single bottle becoming a collectible.

Arnaud Ente

The hallmark of Arnaud Ente's wines, made in tandem with his wife Marie-Odile, is the perfect verve of ripeness & freshness. With meticulous attention in the vineyards, cropping the yields to produce perfect fruit, their vines are often picked earlier than most, yet have achieved perfect ripeness.

The vines are of great age, some more than seventy years old, including the Seve du Clos which was planted just after the phylloxera outbreak had subsided. Beautiful old vines certainly generate the desired depth and density, and in the past two decades the Entes have trended away from opulence and more toward purity & elegance.

There is no strict formula in the cellar - barrels as well as glass tanks have been used, especially in the case of 2016 where there was not enough fruit to fill a barrel. The one dogma is to create a pure vision of each terroir, each bottle possessing a breath-taking weightlessness that belies its intensity and concentration.

Ente’s 2007 Meursault Gouttes d’Or exhibits stony and briny elements one might have predicted given both the site and the wines that went before in his vintage collection. A lovely counterpoint between bright citrus and salt on the one hand and toasted grains and nuts with a hint of honey on the other lends this a distinctive dynamic and – for all of its overtly mineral cast – considerable charm. Zesty, invigorating, and palpably chalky in its long finish, this promises future richness and a good half dozen years of interest. Arnaud Ente began picking September 2, but although he is nearly always a partisan of early harvest, this one was spread out over nearly two weeks to optimize the aggregation of clarity and sufficient ripeness. That said, high acidity – including a sizeable share of malic acid – remained a common denominator and higher than in 2004 because, in Ente's words, "there was no heat during the summer to burn it off." His malo-lactic fermentations, however, were finished already in mid-winter. Natural alcohol levels were low – predictably, given both the vintage and Ente's strategy and preferences – not exceeding 12.5%, and only the Aliogte was chaptalized. For Ente, vintages without hot summer weather are simply the more interesting and enjoyable, thanks in large part precisely to their higher acidity and lower alcohol.

Pale, bright yellow. Pure aromas of citrus fruits and flower blossom. Juicy, tight and a bit clenched; in an elegant but taut style. This pure, vibrant, backward wine is quite suave but will need time in bottle to become more pliant. The firm finish features strong acidity. Very much in the style of the 2008, which Ente describes as buttoned up today. This is 12.4% alcohol, the highest of these 2007s.
