Spanning just 0.33 ha and planted in 1960, Coche-Dury's wines are highly esteemed and eagerly sought after, making them among the most famous white Burgundies. The winemaking process is traditional, involving extended lees contact and aging in barrels for 15-22 months, depending on the vintage. The 2002 vintage showcased a harmonious blend of concentration and richness, complemented by elevated alcohol levels and refreshing acidity. This is the definition of elegance.

The 2002 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru was the one vintage that didn’t entirely meet my expectations. The wine offers up notes of lemon oil, mint, vanilla pod, white flowers and salty soil tones, followed by a full-bodied, ample wine with considerable substance but seemingly missing some of the cut, energy and coherence that even the less celebrated among these eleven vintages displayed. I wonder if it was a perfect bottle?

Steely, penetrating aromas of pineapple, apple and minerals; almost medicinal in its austerity. Then dense, fat and ripe but at the same time powerful, steely and backward. Conveys a drier impression today than the Meursault Perrieres. Not yet particularly complex, but this strongly minerally, layered wine offers great grip and aging potential. Coche noted that there were more rain showers around the village of Aloxe-Corton in '02 than in Meursault, which is one reason he prefers the Meursault Perrieres in this vintage. The same weather pattern occurred in vintage 2003, but in '03 the extra precipitation was a boon for his Corton-Charlemagne vines.
