For several decades a hallmark of quality in the Rhone Valley, Chapoutier's true excellence lies in the single-plot wines in Hermitage, though top quality can be found throughout the range.

As an incredibly recognizable name now, Michel Chapoutier made his name in the 80s and 90s in pioneering styles of wines that deserved to be shared, as he himself was one who saw wine as we do: inclusive, rather than exclusive. As his acclaim built, much of it came as a result of Michel's uncompromising drive to increase quality in any way he could. Today, the range of wines coming from Chapoutier is broad, with something for everyone, and the very special for those who seek more.

Chapoutier was one of the very first in the Rhone to implement biodynamic viticulture, and even though his wines were beloved by critics, he started to see the benefit of lessening the impact of oak and ripeness in favor of balance. Where so many of the wines from other estates released in the 90s and early 00s are vast, bold and starting to peter out, Chapoutier's top wines retain vitality and balance that is retroactively inspiring envy.

Perhaps three of the jewels of the Northern Rhone, the trio of Hermitage Blancs - L'Oree, L'Ermite & Le Meal - represent individual expressions of Marsanne, a widely misunderstood grape. Like Grenache, it can gather ripeness quickly and exhibit a marmalade-type aromatic profile; however, in the hands of gifted vignerons, the texture and acidity balance can create the very greatest white wines the Rhone has seen. Year in and year out, one of the three greatest Hermitages made is Chapoutier’s Le Pavillon. The black/blue-colored 2000 Ermitage Le Pavillon is brilliant out of bottle. Notes of graphite, ink, licorice, creme de cassis, and minerals jump from the glass of this syrup of Hermitage. Full-bodied, unctuously-textured, gorgeously rich, spectacularly concentrated and long, it is a tour de force in winemaking. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2040. (I disagree, but Michel Chapoutier feels his finest three Le Pavillons to date have been 1991 followed by 1995 and 2000. I retain a preference for the glorious trilogy of 1989, 1990, and 1991.) These uncompromising offerings from a young genius are not meant for consumers who want something to drink immediately. They are the essence of bio-dynamically farmed vineyard sites cropped incredibly low, given extended fermentations with indigenous yeasts, and rarely touched until they go into the bottle unfined and unfiltered. In most vintages, the wines are not even racked off their lees, which only adds to their natural style. These are truly remarkable wines, but for most readers, patience is the operative rule as they generally need a good 8-10 years to strut their stuff. Once moribund, over the last 12 years, this firm has become one of the reference points for nearly all the Rhone Valley appellations since the brash yet immensely talented Michel Chapoutier took over in the late eighties. The single vineyard offerings are as good as Rhone Valley wines can be. Moreover, Chapoutier continues to upgrade the quality of those wines offered in more significant quantities than the 500 or so cases each of the single vineyard offerings.

Saturated ruby-red. More reserved aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice, minerals, cinders and spices. Juicy and tight, with a varietally accurate raw currant character. Fresh, intense and structured for the year. Finishes very long, with firm tannins and strong spice character.
