One of Margaux's five second growths, Rauzan-(or sometimes Rausan, at least until 1994) Segla was once part of a vast estate that got splintered by the time of the 1855 classification into four estates. Segla has long made out the best of these four, producing strong, age-worthy wines despite many ownership changes; the winemaking has always been meticulous and the Château well-respected.

Chateau Rauzan-Segla

Currently one of the crown jewels of Chanel's ownership umbrella, Château Rauzan-Segla is vast, 74 hectares in Margaux consisting of nearly two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, almost one-third Merlot with a splash each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot on their gravelly clay soils. About 10,000 cases of the Grand Vin are produced each year, and they also make a fine second wine that is just called Segla.

In contrast to the old methods of large-vat fermentations, today each parcel receives its own smaller, temperature-controlled tank to allow for more precise blending, as well as to isolate the best portions of the vineyards. The Grand Vin will age in about 50-60% new oak for up to 2 years, helping to soften the powerful tannins. The quality keeps spiraling upward as the dedication in the vineyards intensifies; the Château was certified organic in 2019, and as part of that practice have done away with any mechanical harvesting. The efforts have paid off with some of their greatest vintages occurring in the last two decades!
