Made in a lighter style, the fully mature 1999 reveals notes of beef blood, roasted herbs, black truffles, damp earth and black currants intermixed with hints of espresso and spice box. This medium-bodied, velvety textured, lush La Mission should hold nicely for a decade in a cold cellar.

The 1999 La Mission Haut-Brion has finely delineated black fruit, peppermint and secondary aromas of leather and chimney soot that emerge on the nose with time. This is powerful yet focused. The palate has wonderful structure, though it is not a forceful or "ambitious" La Mission. The 1999 compensates with grace and harmony, grainy texture and a very harmonious, satin-textured finish. It is wonderful. Tasted at KP's lunch at Chez Bruce.
