This 1997 vintage comes from various parcels in Meursault and the winemaking approach follows traditional practices, with extended lees contact and aging in barrels for 15-22 months. This wine embodies the true essence of the vintage, the wine is big and lush with a viscous like mouthfeel.

The 1997 Meursault is a similar showing to the example that Raphael Coche opened when I visited back in January ’14. Perhaps the only slight difference is that the nose is a little more oxidative than the previous bottle, but there is still that lovely balance with fine acidity and that live-wire, honeysuckle finish. Commendable for the vintage, although I would drink bottles sooner rather than later.

The 1997 Meursault Village has a fragrant bouquet of white flowers mingling with hazelnut and background notes of wet wool, perhaps becoming just a little diffuse with age. The palate is marked by a silver bead of acidity, and not as complex as I have found some overperforming vintages of Meursault Village to be, but redeemed by lovely, judicious lemon verbena and orange pith on the finish. Not the greatest Coche-Dury that I have tasted, but come on: it’s a 24-year-old village cru! (Two bottles tasted from different sources, one showing more fatigue than the other.)
