Giuseppe Quintarelli took over his family's estate in the 1950s, and properly cemented a style which would become the very identity of great Veneto wines, a legacy which endures to this day.

Quintarelli Giuseppe

"Bepi", as his friends knew him, was not one to settle for any half measure. With so many Valpolicella in the region being crafted in a hot, quick manner, Bepi was known to severely limit his vines' yields to raise quality, and took every step to ensure the highest quality. For his Valpolicella, the wines were made in a "ripasso" style - being passed over Amarone lees to encourage a second fermentation, allowing greater depth and structure that other wines of the region lacked. The wines were then aged upwards of seven years in Slavonian oak vats, slowing the development and crafting a complete wine.

Quintarelli Amarones are a species unto themselves. After the appassimento (drying) process, the wines evolves so slowly that it is often more than a decade before a vintage is released; the Amarone are only made - as with Salon or d'Yquem - in the very finest vintages.

To open a bottle of Quintarelli is to begin a journey. Each flask will enter and pass through countless lives, a full spectrum of emotions and flavors so radiant that few wines on this planet can mimc or approximate. As an added bonus, the longevity without the cork removed is widely unparalleled; one can easily store a Valpolicella or Amarone two to five decades.

The 1995 Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva is a towering, majestic wine of heroic proportions. This big, full-bodied wine flows across the palate with remarkable depth, expansiveness and purity. There is tons of ripe dark fruit here, along with nuances of leather, spices and sweet tobacco. This opulent wine builds on the finish, where it displays superb staying power. This is another reference-point wine from Giuseppe Quintarelli, and although it is insanely expensive, it isn't marred by some of the imperfections (namely excessive volatile acidity) that sometimes show up in his wines.
