The 1989 is more elegant, with none of the herb, meaty, leathery aromas of the 1988. Opaque black/ruby, with a pronounced bouquet of black fruits and spices, this extracted, medium to full-bodied wine is voluptuous on the palate, with a fine finish. The 1989 Talbot promises to drink well during its first decade of life, but keep for up to 20 years. Anticipated maturity: 1994-2015.

The 1989 Talbot has fine attack on the nose: red cherries, bergamot tea and pressed rose petals developing from the glass, maybe they just miss the cohesion and sophistication of the 1986. The palate is medium-bodied with rather harsh, edgy tannin. Notes of black tea and tobacco infused the red fruit with a grainy -textured finish that shows just a touch of dryness on the aftertaste that makes me think it might be better to crack this open sooner rather than later.
