In the Luberon there is great excitement over the wines of Jean-Marie from Guffens-Heynen, and we certainly can't get enough! At 420m altitude, Jean-Marie's vineyards at the Chateau des Tourettes have a cooler air to them, and plenty of energy. Among the 15 hectares of vines you'll find Chardonnay, Marsanne, Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, expertly blended into wines that are both drinkable and age-worthy.

In the spirit of Jean-Marie's effervescent personality and press magic, the wines change regularly given a vintage's unique character. At times, a Blanc de Noirs will be made of Grenache, and the Rouge d'Une Nuit is often times almost rosé in hue despite having the depth and complexity of a Southern Rhone red.

The whites and reds are pressed carefully, usually only using the first pressing for the top "Tinus" line - an homage to his Grandfather's name - and resulting in wines of great elegance far outpacing any neighbor. Fermentation will occur in concrete or neutral oak, with only a tiny amount of new barrels in riper vintages for the Chardonnays.

J.M. Guffens' Notes on the 2025 Vintage:

"The harvest was the smallest since we arrived. The heat caused us to lose 30 to 40% of the crop, depending on the grape variety. The hail just before the harvest didn't help matters."

After great success in the Macon early on, Jean-Marie & Maine Guffens headed to an even lesser-known, more Southern region: the Luberon. More known for plush whites and beefy reds, Jean-Marie found the Chateau des Tourettes atop the highest point of the region, where it possessed its own microclimate (not to mention a limestone-rich slope), and re-planted the vineyards to his ideal.

Today his daughter Marie runs the Chateau along with Jean-Marie's Burgundian winemaker Julien, and their range of wines extends from Chardonnay to Grenache to Cabernet Sauvignon, all incredibly unique and delicious versions of each.

"We remade a 'Blancs de Noirs' cuvée with the Grenache Noirs, blending the pressed white wines, which gives it a richer and more powerful structure than last year." - J.-M. Guffens

A blend of Grenache Noir, Chardonnay, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne from limestone-rich soils, the juices are fermented in tulip-shaped concrete tanks, then aged in stainless steel. 9500 bottles produced.

60% Grenache free-run juice, blended with 40% press juices of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier. Vinified in tulip-shaped concrete vats, followed by settlinn in stainless steel.

"The 'Rouge d'une Nuit' is even fresher and more drinkable thanks to the cooler vintage. Lightly colored, it has the fruit of a Beaujolais and the texture of a Côtes du Rhône. The Syrahs, harvested this year at 13.9°, also have a lot of fruit. I aged them in concrete vats to keep this fruit intact." - J.-M. Guffens

A blend of Grenache & Cabernet Sauvignon from limestone-rich soils. Fermented in tanks, and allowed to rest overnight on the pomace of the Grenache. Aged 4 months within tank. 9500 bottles produced.

2023 Chateau des Tourettes (Maine et Jean-Marie Guffens-Heynen), Tinus Rouge d'Une Nuit, VdF

THE VINEYARD From the vineyards of the Chateau des Tourettes of the Guffens family, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Syrah grown on gentle slopes in the Luberon

FERMENTATION The grapes are harvested early to retain freshness, and the Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah juices will sit for one night with the Grenache must to develop a clear, ruby-red color. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel to preserve freshness.

AGING Retained in tank for 6 months, settled and bottled by gravity.

A mediterranean field blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Syrah grown on gentle slopes in the Luberon, best served slightly chilled.
