Lorenzo Accomasso's career is his passion, dating back almost 75 years, walking among his small but special plots of Barolo vines in La Morra, a cru known for its sensual, silky style. The grapes, he thought, were so special that he became the first in his family's history to bottle his own wines; since that point, he has let bottles creep out of his cellars only by the handful, making them an enviable centerpiece of a few collections worldwide, especially as the traditional Barolos have come back into favor. As Galloni has said, "This is as old school as old school gets." In the best way possible.
Of the same winemaking generation as Bartolo Mascarello and Bruno Giacosa, Lorenzo Accomasso has outlived both yet somehow remained almost reclusive - a genius of his art who chose the work and passion over the fame.
Those who are lucky enough to have tasted his wines know how beautifully they evolve into supple, wildly complex iterations of Piedmont's great grape, as he sources from some of the greatest vineyard sites of all Northern Italy such as the great Rocche dell’Annunziata.
Everything is as it was in the 1950s when Lorenzo was a young man; farming is traditional, as is the winemaking - grapes are fermented in large concrete vats and aged in 50hL botti. Even at his advanced age, Lorenzo feels most at home in the vineyard, doing the work that he loves, whether or not his 1000 cases per year ever see the light of day or not.
These are wines that have developed a cult-like following due to their scarcity; they are some of the most traditional on the market today, meaning that age, along with time in a decanter, will reward the patient. But the vineyards and soul will show through, when you give it its time!
