"Tertre", meaning "knoll", relates to the vineyards' positions at the highest point of Margaux. Cabernet Sauvignon, yes, but a relatively high portion of Cabernet Franc means this wine annually pops like few others.
With a storied history that dates back almost nine centuries, you can be quite sure that several of the top minds in Bordeaux have lusted after this incredible parcel whose wines seem more and more of the moment right now.
With past ownership including the de Segur family (of Lafite, Calon-Segur, et al), what has persisted through the additional changing of hands is that the entire estate - 52 hectares in one chunk of contiguous parcels - has been retained through its entire history.
With its position on the highest point of Margaux, the elevated fruit lends a particular brightness to accompany the depths that Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot can bring. What is somewhat unusual is the rather high proportion of Cabernet Franc for a left-bank house, but this provides a rather distinctive and elegant savory spiced essence to the Chateau's wines year in and out.
In the winery, painstaking care is taken with each step. The juice is moved by gravity into oak, stainless steel and concrete fermentation vessels, and the extraction process is not one of heavy proportions; the focus is elegance, and each bottle highlights this.
