CELLAR ACCESS - JULY!!

CELLAR ACCESS - JULY!!

by Garrett Smith

Peak summer, peak tomatoes, peak strawberries, peak pool parties: July is here and we’ve got some delicious bottles this month to help everything stay cool and keep things interesting.

This month, we’re featuring a trio of incredible producers who are working dynamically in quite traditional regions. There’s a bottle of single-vineyard Gamay from Macon tended to like one of the finest vineyards in the Cote d’Or, a bottle of vintage Champagne from one of the region’s terroir experts and biodynamic authorities, and a bottle of Chablis from Romain Collet who’s in the process of modernizing and revamping his family's entire production.

2017 Charlot-Tanneux, Cuvee Nicolas Premier Cru, Champagne

Cuvee Nicholas is a vintage bottling composed of 95% Pinot Noir and 5% Pinot Meunier from the village of Mardeuil. The wine is fermented in a neutral barrel for 11 months. 4 grams per liter dosage

Charlot-Tanneux

Few vignerons in Champagne can claim to be working more progressively and dynamically than Vincent Charlot in the Coteaux d’Epernay. In a given year, Vincent is likely to produce over 20 masterful cuvees from his family’s 30+ parcels located around the villages of Mardeuil, Vauciennes, Epernay, Moussy, Pierry, and Ay. Unlike most in Champagne, Vincent creates his own biodynamic preparations and consistently makes single-vineyard expressions of Champagne that are not to be missed.

2022 Domaine Jean Collet & Fils, Chablis Premier Cru, Vaillons

The Collets own 10 hectares on the Vaillons hill split between 15 different vineyards, with a majority of the vines being planted in 1972. This wine is fermented in 95% stainless steel and 5% oak. Elevage lasts for 14 months in 1/3 small barrels, 1/3 in old foudre, and 1/3 in stainless steel.

Domaine Jean Collet & Fils

The Collet family has been involved in cultivating grapes in Chablis since 1792. Jean Collet was the first line in the family to begin bottling wine from the family vines in 1954 and helped to promote sales for Chablis both in France and in the export market.

Two generations later, Romain Collet has taken several instrumental steps to improve the quality of wines being made. After serious nerve damage prematurely ended the career of his father, Romain was thrust into the mix during the late aughts at just 21 years of age.

Romain is the beneficiary of his family’s history in the region and their holdings of old vines … the Collets are the principle holders of the Vaillons hill. During his time as the head of the family business, the holdings in Valmur, Les Clos, Montee de Tonnerre, Vaillons and more have all been converted to organics. Additionally, Romain takes a varied approach to applying oak or stainless steel to achieve the most terroir-driven results possible. For example, their Montmains bottling sees no oak during elevage whereas Montee de Tonnerre is aged entirely in oak. You’ll be hard-pressed to find more emblematic wines coming out of the region.

2020 Domaine Guillot-Broux, Macon, Cruzille Beaumont

Beaumont is a single vineyard planted to Gamay in 1978. The vines are trained in Cordon Royat in order to restrain Gamay’s productive nature, leading to more concentrated and elegant fruit. The wine is aged in neutral oak for 11 months before bottling. Seductive, aromatic, and vibrant.

Domaine Guillot-Broux

After apprenticing in the Beaujolais at Domaine de la Chanal and with Bernard Michelot in Meursault, Jean-Gerard Guillot returned home to start Domaine Guillot-Broux in 1978 with his wife. He grew up among family vineyards in Cruzille and his parents are credited with establishing the first organically-farmed vineyard in Burgundy in 1954.

In 2006, Jean-Gerard passed away leaving the domaine to his two sons who have continued to push forward the legacy started by their grandparents.Today, the family meticulously tends 17 hectares of vines across the villages Cruzille, Grevilly, and Chardonnay. Two things stand out as the defining factors of Domaine Guillot-Broux: high density plantings intended to produce concentrated vibrant wines, and several single vineyard sites that Emmanuel and Patrice vinify separately.

The site-specific bottlings of Chardonnay, Gamay, and Pinot Noir are the domaine’s calling card with Beaumont, a selection of old-vine Gamay being one of the domaine’s crown jewels. Year after year, we struggle to find a more delicious and Burgundian Gamay.
